Gábor Visky is an early-stage researcher at Tallinn University of Technology (TalTech), with expertise in the cyber security of ships’ operational technologies.
His prior assignments include 15 years of designing hardware and software for embedded control systems and researching their vulnerabilities at the NATO Cooperative Cyber Defence Centre of Excellence.
A global trend in progressive digitalisation is affecting—among other things —the maritime sector, bringing up cyber-related challenges on shore and ships. Gábor contributes to the cyber research of ship operational technologies.
How do you see your role in the Horizon 2020 ERA Chair project?
The ERA Chair project is a pivotal aspect of my journey. It provides an exceptional background and invaluable research opportunities, helping high-quality research publication writing, which is my role.
Why is Estonia/TalTech the best place for the ERA Chair project in maritime security?
Estonia prides itself on its open-mindedness. It fosters an environment of high flexibility and minimal bureaucracy, which is fertile ground for cultivating new ideas. TalTech and the Estonian Maritime Academy boast a rich legacy and untapped potential in maritime and cyber domains. With such robust foundations, we possess all the essential ingredients for success.
What are the main challenges in the project?
The ERA Chair project presents a formidable challenge due to its multidisciplinary nature. It encompasses maritime and cyber domains, each brimming with diverse facets. This complexity adds vibrancy to the field and renders it intricate to navigate.
How do you see the future of the Center?
In my eyes, if we establish solid bases and invest our resources wisely, the community and society will benefit in the long term. As I have learned in the last few years, the word „Centre” means a stable point for management, support, and coordination that multiplies the efficiency of the joined efforts, leading to better results.
What would be the key experience you take with you from the past to the project?
Developing embedded systems is always challenging because of their complexity and limited resources. Since my roots come from this field, over a cyber security researcher experience, I hope to contribute uniquely to the project.
What connects you to the sea and maritime sector?
Throughout my time in Tallinn’s marinas, I was deeply involved with the maritime community and the warmth of its people.
